Taiko Drums of Japan:
With performances drawn from the rich folk heritage of Japan, the Ryu Shu Kan presents a diverse program of Taiko Drums, Folk Song & Dance to immerse the participants in a traditional Japanese festival experience. We also offer workshops.

Hiroko & Gerard Senese formed the Ryu Shu Taiko Drum group in 1999 which consists of Karate students, their parents, and other enthusiastic members of the Long Island community. Ryu Shu Taiko presents traditional and contemporary Taiko drumming and Folk dance throughout the Long Island and NY metro area to local schools, libraries, Asian-American Festivals, and Multi-Cultural events.

Japanese Ikebana
Flower Arrangements
Join Hiroko & Gerard Senese -from the Japan Center at Stony Brook University- for a demonstration of the different styles of Japanese flower arrangements; and a workshop to create your own Ikebana based on an arrangement that Hiroko has designed on that day.

Hiroko Uraga-Senese studied Ikebana in Osaka, Japan in the prestigious Misho-Ryu style of Ikebana, which was established over 200 years ago.She received her "Master Teacher's" Certificate in 1980 and has been introducing Ikebana to the Long Island community since 1995.

Sho-Do: the Art of the Brush
Discover the Zen art of Japanese Calligraphy.
Sho-Do: The “Way of the Brush” – has been one of the most important and highly respected arts in Japan for centuries. Sho-Do develops the dynamic movement of body, mind, and spirit of the artist’s Life Energy -- “Ki” –– and this becomes evident in the form of rich black ink brushed onto paper.In advanced examples of Sho-Do, you can sense a flow and rhythm like a piece of music as well as an elegance and balance found in refined architecture.

Hiroko Uraga-Senese earned her Teacher’s License in the All-Japan Calligraphy association, Nihon Shuji, based in Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto is considered the aesthetic capital of Japan; and has been teaching Sho-Do here on Long Island since 1995.

ORIGAMI
thE JAPANESE ART OF PAPER FOLDING
Origami is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture.The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques.Traditional Japanese origami begins with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be of different colors, prints, or patterns.The best-known origami model is the Japanese paper crane.

Kumihimo is a Japanese art of braiding cords and braids using multiple strands of yarn or ribbon. The word kumihimo translates to "gathered threads".

SHIMENAWA
thE JAPANESE NEW YEAR'S GOOD LUCK WREATH
In Japan it is customary on New Year to display “Shimenawa” on the entrance door to ward off evil spirits and welcome good fortune. Traditional Shimenawa is made of twisted rice straw rope but nowadays paper “raffia” ribbon is often used. The wreaths are decorated with auspicious symbols such as Origami Cranes for longevity, Pine branches for strength, and flowers for beauty, that blooms, even in the dead of winter,.
